The Geothermal Park is in the middle of the town and the Hot river trail is only 3 km away.

Around 1929, the village Hveragerði began to form after cooperation for the dairy Mjólkurbú Ölfusinga was established. At the same time, green farming began, and various attempts were made to utilize heat, which is a characteristic of the town. Having a geothermal area in the center of the town is unique nationwide. Examples of geothermal energy utilization include a seaweed flour factory where seaweed flour was produced. The first students graduated from the state’s Horticultural School in Reykir in 1941. Many horticultural centers were built in the following years, and Reykjavík residents began to get used to visiting Hveragerði to buy horticultural products. In 1946, the bakery Hverabakarí started its operations, now called Almar Bakari bakery. To this day, steam is used for baking in Hveragerði.

Hot springs were stigmatized as accident traps for people and animals in the past. Foreign gardeners, however, saw potential in using the hot water, and from 1900 onwards, individuals and hobby groups began to make various cultivation experiments. The establishment of the state’s Horticultural School accelerated the development of horticulture in Iceland, where important activities are underway, as our future is based, among other things, on utilizing the resources that the country has to offer.

In the early days of Hveragerði, the town began as a small settlement primarily because of its geothermal resources. In the 20th century, Icelanders recognized the potential of the area’s hot springs, not only for heating and agriculture but also as a source of inspiration for artists. The town's unique geothermal landscapes, with steaming earth and bubbling pools, captivated early settlers and visitors alike, leading to a flourishing artistic culture. Artists were drawn to the area's dramatic contrasts, using the natural surroundings to influence their work, and over time, Hveragerði developed into a town where art and nature coexist harmoniously, laying the foundation for today’s vibrant creative community.

This artist residency space is known as "The Little House" (or "Litla Húsið" in Icelandic). This quaint, modestly-sized house provides a cozy and intimate setting for artists to work and is a cherished spot within the community of Hveragerði.

The Hengill Geothermal Mountain range behind Hveragerði is not only known for its stunning volcanic landscapes, but the area also sits above a highly active geothermal area that powers the Nesjavellir and Hellisheiði geothermal power stations, and also provides hot water to the town of Hveragerði. The Nesjavellir and Hellisheiði stations provide electricity and hot water to the capital area of Reykjavik, utilizing the steam and heat from deep underground.

In addition to being an energy source, Hengill offers visitors a chance to explore volcanic craters, steaming hot springs, and boiling mud pools, creating an otherworldly hiking experience. The area is filled with scenic trails, some of which lead to natural hot springs where hikers can take a warm soak, blending adventure with relaxation in Iceland’s rugged beauty.
